Khalid Hasan Syed
Sr. GM Engineering
In the heart of a thriving pharmaceutical hub, where every day brings new challenges and opportunities, Khalid Hasan’s journey stands as a testament to dedication and teamwork. As the Senior General Manager of Engineering at PharmEvo, Khalid’s path has been shaped by resilience, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Khalid’s story begins at the University of Jamshoro, where he pursued his Bachelor of Engineering with passion and determination. It was here that he honed the technical skills that would go on to define his career. His leadership style continues to reflect his deep belief in the power of teamwork. As a manager, Khalid is not just a decision-maker, but a mentor who fosters an environment where every team member feels valued and empowered.
Q: When did you join PharmEvo, and what has your journey been like?
A: I began my career in 1989 with a non-pharmaceutical company, right after completing my Diploma of Associate Engineering (Mechanical) in 1987. My first manager taught me a valuable lesson: “Never skip steps in life—continue to improve gradually, step by step.” This lesson has been foundational in my journey. To enhance my technical knowledge and education, I went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts and then a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Jamshoro.
After my first job, I moved to the pharmaceutical industry, joining Eli Lilly Gohar as an Engineering Executive for five years, followed by three years at Getz Pharma as Manager of Maintenance. In 2006, I joined PharmEvo, and I’ve been with the company for 18 years now. Each day at PharmEvo offers new learning opportunities in this ever-growing organization, and I am grateful for the chances I’ve had to develop professionally. Our CEO, Mr. Haroon Qassim, is incredibly humble and a great leader, providing me with continuous support to build my confidence. Whenever decisions are made about new machines or production equipment, they are made through mutual collaboration with our factory’s technical team.
In 2008-09, we revamped our production facility to maximize output, adding new warehouses for raw and packaging material. Later, in 2016-17, we completed a major upgrade with the addition of a new basement, 40ft warehouses, and a state-of-the-art nutraceutical facility. Now, we are planning our third and final revamping phase, expanding our warehouses and manufacturing capacity in preparation for 2030.
Q: Can you share a memorable event from your time at the plant?
A: Just twenty days before our first WHO audit, I had an accident and fractured my left arm while
construction work was underway at the facility.I was understandably concerned about how construction would be completed with my injury. However, I rejoined the office on the third day after surgery, and through the incredible teamwork of my colleagues, we met our target. The WHO audit took place shortly after, and everything went smoothly.
Q: How have you evolved both personally and professionally?
A: Over the years, I’ve learned to balance my aggressive nature, which my family often points out, by developing soft skills at Eli Lilly Gohar, hard skills at my first company (Cornpak Private Limited), and smart skills at PharmEvo. Over time, I’ve realized that leadership qualities are essential to becoming a good manager.
Q: What is your leadership style?
A: I prefer a collaborative approach. When we work on a project, I always encourage my team to share their ideas first, after which I provide my input. Together, we select the best option from the various suggestions.
Q: Who are the mentors who have inspired you?
A: Two mentors who are no longer with us had a profound impact on me: Baqar Hadi, Sr. Manager of Production, and Ejaz Sab, General Manager of Product Development. Both were incredible human beings and guided me from the beginning of my career at PharmEvo. Today, Afzal Sab, Sr. General Manager of Production, is my mentor, and we’ve been working together for ten years.
Q: Can you tell us about your family?
A: I come from a family of six siblings—four sisters and two brothers. I married in 1995 in a completely arranged marriage, and in 1996, we were blessed with a daughter. I also have two sons, all of whom are talented and studying at top universities. I live with my mother, a housewife, while my father, a banker, passed away two years ago.
Q: What drives you at work?
A: The work environment at PharmEvo is exceptional. The trust our top management places in us motivates us to work more efficiently and with focus. We feel comfortable in our roles, and the management supports our decisions, giving us the freedom to act with confidence.
Q: What’s the most enjoyable thing about factory life? Is it monotonous?
A: Each time we celebrate an achievement or an event at the factory, it becomes a highlight. That said, with the high demand we face, some aspects of factory life can feel monotonous, as we continue striving to meet production goals.
Q: How do you maintain a work-life balance?
A: Transitioning from work to home can be hectic, but I make a conscious effort to maintain a healthy work-life balance. After dinner, my wife and I take a relaxing walk together, sharing the
events of our respective days. I am truly grateful for the strong, supportive relationship we have built over the years.
Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
A: Focus and concentration are crucial for success. Many young people fail to direct their attention toward their goals, which leads to missed opportunities later in life. Absorbing knowledge and skills while you’re young can set you on the right path.
Q: What skill do you wish you had mastered?
A: I would have liked to become proficient in AutoCAD programming for building design.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
A: I’ve always dreamed of being a hockey player. I played with some of the top hockey players in Pakistan and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Q: Do you think Evodians embody PharmEvo’s value system?
A: There’s still a gap, but it’s something that can be bridged over time. Practicing the ITREE values will help us all become better in aligning with the company’s culture.
Q: What quality should every Evodian possess?
A: Trust is an essential trait that every Evodian should embrace.
Q: What’s your stress-buster or hobby?
A: On weekends, I enjoy jogging, and during weekdays, spending quality time with my family serves as a significant stress reliever.
Q: How do you approach decision-making in your professional life?
A: I always consult with my team before making decisions. We discuss options and then proceed based on collective input.
Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: I’ve had two accidents involving my left leg, and as someone who loves jogging, it has been difficult to continue my routines. I’m currently in touch with several consultants to find the best solutions for my recovery and to resume my physical fitness activities.
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: My favorite book is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I particularly appreciate the concept of “Paradigm Shift,” which is explained so clearly in the book.
Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I would go to the past to relive and experience those memorable moments again.
Q: Name two leaders who inspire you?
A: Dr. Munir Anwar Sab and Mr. Abrar Khurshid.
Q: How do you want to be remembered?
A: I wish to be remembered for my good deeds and contributions.
Q: What skill would you recommend to Gen Z to excel in their careers?
A: I encourage Gen Z to focus on developing strong decision-making skills. It is crucial to practice these skills consistently over time to excel in both professional and personal life.
